Carlton are planning for life after Jack Silvagni as they consider a trade for fringe Western Bulldogs utility Buku Khamis.

With defender Silvagni announcing his intention to explore his free agency options last week, the Blues are scrambling to fill the void in their backline.

Noise during the recent season has suggested Khamis could be looking for a move away from Whitten Oval, after only playing 41 games in seven years.

Khamis - who is contracted until the end of 2026 - is an 191cm utility, who can play as a tall defender and tall forward.

The 25-year-old saw the likes of Jordan Croft preferred to him as a forward during the back half of the 2025 season, while James O'Donnell, Liam Jones and Nick Coffield have been chosen ahead of him in defence.

"He showed a bit of promise as an intercepting defender. This was a year where we seemed to think he was coming along – and then he fell out of favour," journalist Scott Gullan told Fox Footy.

"He’s contracted for another year. I know for a fact he was on the Blues’ whiteboard and they’ve increased their interest with the obvious Silvagni going and they need help for (Jacob) Weitering – and they think this kid’s got a bit more promise.

"There’s going to be a lot of magnets. The Bulldogs have to deal with their own defensive issues and clearly Buku isn’t the one they’re looking at, so ‘see you later’ potentially."

Khamis would likely only require a third round selection to be traded by the Bulldogs, who have showed they haven't rated the utility during the 2025 season.

It's shaping to be a season of upheaval at Carlton, with Silvagni, Tom De Koning and Elijah Hollands all-but certain to leave the club, while Charlie Curnow is open to a trade.
