Brisbane 'really clear' on why the Callum Ah Chee trade fell apart image

Dual premiership Lion Callum Ah Chee ultimately proved one of the more fascinating cases of a wild AFL Trade period.

It was announced well before the trade period even officially began that Ah Chee had requested a move to the Adelaide Crows.

Drafted by the Suns with pick eight back in 2015, the recently turned 28-year-old has played 169 AFL games and had a five-year deal on the table to move to South Australia.

Yet the trade deadline came and went with Ah Chee still a Brisbane Lion after the clubs couldn't agree on a deal.

The Lions refuted Adelaide's offer of future second and future third-round picks and the Queensland side may now lose him for nothing via the preseason draft.

The Crows remain committed to adding the attacking midfielder to their ranks.

“We certainly explored many avenues in our endeavours to get a deal done with Brisbane,” Adelaide list manager Justin Reid said in a statement late on Wednesday.

“Callum has given great service to the Lions and we see him as a player who can really help improve our squad.

“We’re committed to Callum joining the club and he is committed to joining us.”

Port Adelaide could also make a late play for Ah Chee's services, with Power list manager Jason Cripps telling SEN "we'll have that discussion internally".

From the Lions' perspective, it seems they were intent on getting what they consider fair market value for Ah Chee, which they determined was a first-round pick.

Even if they now lose the two-time premiership winner for nothing, the Lions felt they had to stand their ground, as Brisbane list boss Dom Ambrogio told AFL Trade Radio’s Deadline Debrief.

“The reality is a future third is window dressing, particularly for a successful club," he said.

"That pick can end up back in the 50s and picks in the 50s are very rarely used.

“So effectively we’re looking at a fairly late-ish pick and we just didn’t find that acceptable. We were really clear about that from the start.”
