The AFL trade period is over for another year, with many players changing teams, but there were some huge trades that ended up not happening.

Essendon captain Zach Merrett wasn't traded to Hawthorn in the most dramatic circumstances, with the teams not being able to come together and sort out a trade, with the Bombers rejecting three first-round picks.

St Kilda ruckman Rowan Marshall requested a trade to Geelong, but couldn't end up at the Cats as the Saints remained steadfast that they wouldn't trade him.

Two-time premiership player and Brisbane Lion Callum Ah-Chee wasn't traded to Adelaide, with a trip to the preseason draft inevitable for Ah Chee, who is out of contract.

Western Bulldogs backman Buku Khamis couldn't get a trade to his requested club of Carlton, with reports that the Charlie Curnow deal took too long for Khamis to end up at the Bulldogs.

North Melbourne captain Jy Simpkin was nearly traded to Collingwood, but the Kangaroos said the offer of a future second-round pick was 'so far away' from what they thought Simpkin was worth.

Kangaroo's list manager Brady Rawlings said it was 'probably going to look unlikely' that Simpkin would be captain next year after wanting a trade from the club

Melbourne backman Steven May had a contract with the club for 2026, but was advised to explore other options and try to secure a longer contract. However, with no club trading for him, he will likely remain at the club.

Carlton wanted Elijah Hollands, who has a contract for next year, to also look at his options, but with no suitors, the Blues have said they will look at either keeping him at the club or paying out his contract.

Arguably, the most talked about failed trade was GWS's Leek Aleer, who was all but set to be traded to St Kilda on a large contract before the Saints pulled out of the deal, leaving the 'shattered' young backman signing a two-year extension with the Giants.
