Willem Duursma has become the latest number one pick, and the fourth Duursma to enter the AFL system.
The Gold Coast Suns matched a number of bids in what is one of the longest first rounds in AFL history. Meanwhile, Essendon walked away with three of the most highly touted players in this year's draft.
Hawthorn also added to their forward stocks late in Wednesday night's first round, plus much, much more.

AFL National Draft LIVE - First Round
1. Willem Duursma (West Coast)
Position: Utility
Recruited from: Gippsland Power
The draft experts are 1/1 so far, as Willem Duursma heads number one to the Eagles. He becomes the fourth Duursma to enter the AFL system, alongside his two brothers, Xavier and Zane, in the men's system, and sister Yasmin in the AFLW.
West Coast are getting a versatile player, capable of playing all over the ground, particularly at half back and in the midfield. In part thanks to his basketball background, one of Willem's greatest strengths is his aerial ability.
Harley Reid presents him with the jumper. Who will the Eagles take next?
2. Zeke Uwland (Gold Coast, bid from West Coast)
Position: Midfield
Recruited from: Gold Coast Suns Academy
It's our first bid of the night, and certainly won't be our last, but Zeke is set to join his brother, Bodhi, at the Suns. Undersized compared to some of the other top prospects in this draft, listed at 178cm, but he more than makes up for it.
A back injury prevented him from playing more football this year, but he's showed plenty in previous years that justifies this selection.
3. Harry Dean (Carlton, bid from West Coast)
Position: Key defender
Recruited from: Murray Bushrangers
The best key defender in the draft goes at number three, forcing Carlton into an early bid for their father-son prospect. Harry is the son of Peter Dean, the two-time premiership player for the Blues.
The Blues have needed to develop their key defensive stocks next to Jacob Weitering, and they could develop into a dominant one-two punch down back for Carlton in the coming years.
4. Cooper Duff-Tytler (West Coast)
Position: Ruck/Key forward
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
After two matching bids, the West Coast Eagles finally get their man in Cooper Duff-Tytler. Similarly to Duursma, Duff-Tytler also comes from a basketball background, although you probably could’ve picked it as he stands at over 200cm tall. As such, he will spend time both in the ruck and as key forward, two positions the Eagles could use some help in moving forward.
Having only turned 18 in August, he still has plenty of time to fill out his frame, which would be a priority as he starts competing against the Max Gawn’s of the world. Even so, he’s shown he’s more than capable of competing with grown men. In his one VFL appearance this year for Essendon he booted three goals from five scoring shots, to go along with 13 disposals, six hitouts and two marks.
5. Dylan Patterson (Gold Coast, bid from Richmond)
Position: Defender
Recruited from: Gold Coast Suns Academy
Second pick of the top-five for the Gold Coast as they match a bid on Dylan Patterson - not bad for a team that made a semi-final this year. A half-back with plenty of pace, and has a knack for finding the footy which will help him as he continues to progress as a midfielder.
Received plenty of comparisons to Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera. If he's anything like 'NAS' the Suns will be a threat for years to come.
6. Daniel Annable (Brisbane Lions, bid from Richmond)
Position: Midfield
Recruited from: Brisbane Lions Academy
Now the premiers' turn to select at the top of the draft, as Daniel Annable heads to the Lions. A genuine gun, he will even be a genuine chance to crack into the Lions' midfield next year, as they look to three-peat.
As consistent as any player in this year's draft. In eight VFL appearances this year, Annable finished with 20-plus disposals five times, the highlight coming in round 18 against the Suns, where he totalled 28 disposals to go along with a goal.
7. Sam Cumming (Richmond)
Position: Midfield
Recruited from: North Adelaide
After two unsuccussful bids, Richmond are finally able to make their first pick of the night, taking Sam Cumming at pick seven. Powerful and provides plenty of burst, and able to attack the goals.
Makes the most of every possession, and will be spend time in the forward line next year as well as on the wing, but mainly plays as an inside midfielder. Has experience in the SANFL too, so should adjust well to the AFL.
8. Samuel Grlj (Richmond)
Position: Midfielder
Recruited from: Oakleigh Chargers
Richmond continue to stack their midfield, taking Sam Grlj and pick eight. Arguably the best athlete in the class, as he's able to run all day. Definitely a modern type of midfielder, who will also be able provide and run and carry off half-back for the Tigers.
9. Sullivan Robey (Essendon)
Position: Midfield/Forward
Recruited from: Eastern Ranges
Could prove to be a steal here for the Bombers at pick nine. Robey was on nobody's radar at the beginning of the year, but he burst onto the scene as the year progressed, and if he continues at this rate, he could be anything.
He's grown literally in the last year, and he's filling out his frame well. Powerful and explosive, and at 192cm, he will be a big body that can roll through the Bombers' midfield.
10. Jacob Farrow (Essendon)
Position: Defender
Recruited from: West Perth
One of the best and longest kicks in the draft with his damaging left foot. A capable defender at 187cm, will likely spend some time at half-back. But many project he'll grow into an even better defender, following the development of someone like Jordan Dawson.
11. Xavier Taylor (Melbourne)
Position: Defender
Recruited from: Eastern Ranges
Melbourne fill a need with Xavier Taylor set to provide some youth in an aging Demons defence. At 192cm he's able to play tall and intercept the footy exceptionally, but able to play small as well and find the footy and use it well. Versatile enough to defend tall and small forwards as well.
12. Latrelle Pickett (Melbourne)
Position: Forward
Recruited from: Glenelg
Another Pickett joins the Dees, and Latrelle receives his jumper from cousin Kysaiah! A surprise to some that Latrelle gets selected this soon, but he possesses a lot of the same excitement that his cousin does, and is a genuine goal scorer as shown by some performances in the SANFL Reserves.
In spite of a mega extension this year, Kysaiah Pickett's future seems to be a never-ending story for the Demons, but with his cousin by his side, that might help put it to rest for good.
13. Dyson Sharp (Essendon)
Position: Midfield
Recruited from: Central Districts
Essendon get another midfielder, and perhaps the best character of anyone in the draft. Experts have heavily praised his leadership abilities, with many believing he could one day be a captain.
But he's more than just a leader, considered one of the best pure midfielders in this draft. Played some footy in the SANFL, and showed his class throughout the year.
14. Harry Kyle (Sydney Swans, bid from Greater Western Sydney)
Position: Defender
Recruited from: Sydney Swans Academy
Another player that goes earlier than some may have expected, but GWS force their crosstown rivals to match a bid for Academy prospect Harry Kyle. Another late riser, but many think he could be anything.
15. Oskar Taylor (Greater Western Sydney)
Position: Defender
Recruited from: Eastern Ranges
After missing out on Harry Kyle, GWS take another defender in Harry Kyle. A smaller defender that should complement their stacked key defensive stocks well. A quick user off half-back that will help a Giants side that is heavy on grunt and clearance keep up with a modern style of play off half-back. Another left footer gets taken.
16. Lachy Dovaston (North Melbourne)
Position: Forward
Recruited from: Eastern Ranges
Considered to be the best small forward in the draft, not a bad pick from the Kangaroos. Over the last few drafts they've looked for midfielders, but you can never have enough goal kickers. Could be a real chance to crack into the side early next year, with not much in front of him.
17. Jai Murray (Gold Coast, bid from West Coast)
Position: Midfield
Recruited from: Gold Coast Suns Academy
Could've gone a lot higher in this draft, but an early-season lisfranc injury prevented him from boosting his stock. Will be another midfielder Damien Hardwick can lean on over the years, and could crack the side potentially on a wing as soon as next season.
18. Beau Addinsall (Gold Coast, bid from West Coast)
Position: Midfield
Recruited from: Gold Coast Suns Academy
I wonder if Andrew Dillon is sick of saying "Gold Coast have matched West Coast's bid." The groans of the crowd suggest they might be. Nonetheless, Beau Addinsall sees another midfielder from the Suns' Academy make their way to Gold Coast.
The Suns get a major ball-winner and another athlete. The Suns don't currently have a shortage of those, so his time will likely be limited next year, but definitely one for the future. Will the Eagles force another bid?
19. Josh Lindsay (West Coast)
Position: Defender
Recruited from: Geelong Falcons
One of the best kicks in the draft. Many say it's the best they've seen from a draftee in years. An excellent kick out of the back half that has been likened to that of a quarterback.
Has plenty of experience as captain throughout his junior years, so the Eagles grab themselves another leader. Can't hurt after losing co-captain Oscar Allen to free agency.
20. Cameron Nairn (Hawthorn)
Position: Forward
Recruited from: Central District
Perhaps slid further than some expected, not a bad result for Hawthorn who moved back multiple times. At 188cm, he's able to play above and below that height, as a great overhead marker that can also use the footy well by foot, as well an elite runner.
Later in the year moved up the ground, getting experience in the midfield and on the wing.
21. Lachlan Carmichael (Western Bulldogs)
Position: Defender
Recruited from: Sydney Swans Academy
The first bit not matched tonight, as the Swans' Academy member Lachlan Carmichael heads to the Western Bulldogs. Could he follow the same path as Josh Dunkley?
Carmichael is a terrific ball user of half-back.
22. Mitch Marsh (Adelaide)
Position: Key forward
Recruited from: West Adelaide
No, not that one. The Crows looking for the future, as the third key forward position alongside Riley Thilthorpe and Darcy Fogarty could soon be vacated by Taylor Walker. They traded for Finnbar Maley at the trade deadline, but Marsh could be who they seen as the long-term replacement.
23. Aidan Schubert (Hawthorn)
Position: Key forward
Recruited from: Central District
Hawthorn grab another forward at pick 23. They get a terrific marker who can find the goals. At 198cm he's capable of pinching out in the ruck. The Hawks had stiff competition for key forward spots late in the year, between Jack Gunston, Mabior Chol, Calsher Dear and Mitch Lewis, so could be some time before we see him at AFL level, but definitely has the tools to make it at AFL level.
24. Harley Barker (Geelong)
Position: Midfield
Recruited from: Sturt
Another player whose stock may have been hindered by injury, after tearing his ACL. He'll miss the early stage of next season, but he couldn't have gone to a better club. The Cats won't be needing him straight away, but he'll do his apprenticeship and will be every chance to grow into an integral part of their midfield alongside Bailey Smith and Max Holmes.
25. Adam Sweid (Fremantle)
Position: Midfield
Recruited from: Calder Cannons
Part of Essendon's Next Generation Academy, but the Bombers choose not to match in what proves to be the final pick of the first round. A relatively undersized midfielder that can also play half forward.
