The Cats have long set the standard when it comes to elaborate end-of-season dress-ups, but their efforts this year, following their grand final defeat to Brisbane, have come under fire.

Geelong were powerless to stop a rampant Lions in the second half at the MCG on Saturday, eventually going down by 47 points to see Brisbane claim a second straight premiership.

Despite the loss, Cats players still went all-out on Monday, turning up the Geelong Wharf Shed in all manner of fancy dress outfits.

Some notable fits included Max Holmes as journalist Caroline Wilson, Patrick Dangerfield and Rhys Stanley's homage to TV's Yellowstone, Ollie Dempsey and Sam De Koning poking fun at the criticism of the club's third-party arrangement with clothing retailer Cotton On, Brad Close as renowned Geelong superfan "Catman", and Bailey Smith as Brad Pitt's Tristan Ludlow from 1994 film Legends of the Fall, while trio Mark Blicavs, Mark O’Connor and Cillian Burke turned up as Irish rap group Kneecap.

Despite the Cats' antics a regular fixture at the end of each season, Kane Cornes said this year's edition it was particularly on the nose given Saturday's result.

"Imagine getting embarrassed on Grand Final Day, getting absolutely smashed, but then in the background somewhere, you have organised a face painter to have your face painted like a cat, to turn up and celebrate a 10 goal Grand Final loss," Cornes said on SEN.

"I'm talking about Brad Close, who at some point last week thought, 'We're going to win the premiership, I'm going to organise a face painter, I'm going to sit down for an hour or 90 minutes to get my face painted after we've been smashed and I've had 12 touches in a grand final and I'm going to turn up while my supporters are still hurting and celebrate a grand final smashing.

"Imagine Max Holmes thinking it's a good idea to disrespect a legend of Australian football media in Caroline Wilson and dressing up as her and trying to ridicule her."

Several players have found themselves in hot water following end-of-season celebrations in recent times, most significantly six Giants players who were suspended over inappropriate behaviour last year.

"Geelong haven't had many missteps... I thought that was one of the more embarrassing days at the Geelong footy club that I've seen in a while," he said.

"They've owned this space for a long period time, but at some point... clubs have just got to say, 'It's not book week, we're not in year five.

"Let's just turn up in a shirt and some jeans and have a good day, a few quiet beers and celebrate a grand final loss where we got smashed in the second half.

"We don't need to dress up and make ourselves look like fools.

"Close, Holmes, Smith and Dangerfield, I thought they embarrassed themselves yesterday.
