This week provided jaw-dropping content all over the country - from new No. 1s to dramatic in-state upsets to interstate clashes that established a pecking order.
Here’s a look a the nominees for this week’s “Sporting News Team of the Week.”
The poll will close at midnight on Tuesday and a winner will be announced Wednesday.
West Linn Lions (Oregon)
The West Linn Lions are among the state title favorites at the 6A (big school) level in Oregon.
On Friday, West Linn traveled to Sumner (Washington), 4A state champion, for a battle of title teams.
West Linn picked up with win behind two Sloan Baker touchdown passes and big plays on both sides of the ball for Sporting News Preseason All-American Josiah Molden (touchdown catch, interception).
Mater Dei Monarchs (California)
A week after losing its first game to a non-St. John Bosco opponent since 2015, Mater Dei bounced back in a big way, defeating new No. 1 Bishop Gorman 27-24.
Quarterback Ryan Hopkins, a Wisconsin commit, threw for 258 yards and three touchdowns, including two to five-star tight end Mark Bowman (USC commit).
McCallie Blue Tornado (Tennessee)
Like Mater Dei, McCallie was coming off a loss.
The Blue Tornado were upset by Ensworth last week, but pulled off a massive national upset Friday.
McCallie beat Mission Viejo (California) 25-14, a team that was flirting with top-10 status nationally in many polls.
McCallie’s defense held Mission Viejo scoreless through the first half to build a 10-0 lead, then hang on in the second half.
It was a monster rebound for the program.
Sierra Canyon Trail Blazers (California)
In a clash of two of the top teams in California on Thursday night, Sierra Canyon made a big statement, beating Orange Lutheran 41-9.
The Trailblazers were led by their devastating front seven defensively, which registered 10 tackles-for-loss and six sacks in the contest.
Rockwall Yellowjackets (Texas)
In a Texas-sized shocker, Rockwall upset defending 6A Division I state champion North Crowley 37-35, snapping the program’s 19-game winning streak.
Rockwall earned the win in dramatic fashion, as quarterback Brent Rickert found Ryan Wiley for a 20-yard touchdown strike with just 22 seconds left.
North Crowley managed a late Hail Mary attempt, but it was batted down in the end zone to seal the win.
Waxahachie Indians (Texas)
The Waxahachie Indians beat Texas power (and nationally-ranked) Duncanville 28-27.
Duncanville actually led 27-9 midway through the third quarter.
But Waxahachie stormed back.
The Indians registered two touchdown passes from Jerry Meyer III and a touchdown run from Nolan Barnard to regain the lead.
Lone Peak Knights (Utah)
Fueled by four interceptions, the Lone Peak Knights blasted Corner Canyon 42-21
Cruz Christiensen, usually a back-up quarterback, filled in and threw for 243 yards and four touchdowns with a fifth score as a runner.
Wide receiver Jaron Pula hauled in nine catches for 162 yards and three of those four scores.
