Jackson Arnold never clicked for this program, but Mateer should. He succeeded Cam Ward in the Wazzu system after Ward transferred to Miami, and the Mateer breakout was on. He surpassed 3,000 passing yards and amassed 29 touchdowns, 826 rushing yards and an additional 15 TDs on the ground.
Mateer will have more weapons than ever in Oklahoma. Deep threat Javonnie Gibson is expected to return from injury around the start of the season. Veteran wideout and safety blanket Deion Burks will be back, too.
Tight end transfers Will Huggins and Carson Kent will help. Jaydn Ott and Jovantae Barnes will lead an underrated ground attack. Needless to say, the weapons are in the arsenal for the Sooners to return to the level of greatness their fans have come to expect.

The 2025-26 college football season kicks off for Oklahoma on Saturday, Aug. 30. The Sooners will host seven games at Gaylord Family Oklahoma Memorial Stadium, while going on the road for five games.
