Coco Gauff and Naomi Osaka, are set for a high-profile showdown in the US Open Round of 16 on Monday evening.
While Gauff dominated Magdalena Frech 6-3, 6-1, Osaka scored a hard-fought 6-0, 4-6, 6-3 win over No. 15 seed Daria Kasatkina in the previous round. Both former champions, both crowd favorites, Osaka and Gauff are set battle it out for the quarterfinal berth.
It is a rematch of the 2019 third round, when Osaka, the defending champion defeated Gauff, who was making her main draw US Open debut, in straight sets. But the tables have turned since.
Osaka, a four-time major champion, hasn't quite been a dominant force in women's tennis in the last few years, while Gauff is the reigning French Open champion and a slight favorite going into the contest. The American also leads their head-to-head series 3-2.
