The USWNT needs to win or draw against Portugal to keep their name in the game on Tuesday.
Team USA has never been eliminated at the group play stage in the eight editions of the FIFA Women's World Cup, but that harrowing possibility remains on the table entering the final match in Group E.
They defeated Vietnam in the opener 3-0, salvaged a 1-1 draw against the Netherlands, and are tied at four points with the Dutch. They still remain in first in the group standings on goal differential.
If they can't pull off a win or a draw over their third and final group opponent, Portugal, then they will most likely be eliminated, a rather cold bucket of water dumped over their heads.
Unless, of course, something absolutely bonkers happens. And because it's soccer, you just never know.
