Romanian referee Istvan Kovacs will officiate the 2025 UEFA Champions League final between Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Milan.

UEFA confirmed the appointment on Monday, with the match set for Saturday, May 31 at Allianz Arena, Munich.

Kovacs, who is 40, becomes one of the few referees in history to officiate the finals of all three major UEFA club competitions.

He took charge of the 2022 UEFA Conference League final between Roma and Feyenoord and the 2024 Europa League final between Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta. Now, he completes the rare trifecta with the Champions League final.

The Romanian, who officiates regularly in the SuperLiga, has already handled seven Champions League games this season.

Among them were PSG’s shootout win over Liverpool at Anfield and Inter’s 1–0 win against Arsenal in the group stage. He also oversaw PSG’s 1–0 loss to Bayern Munich.

Joining him on the night will be compatriots Mihai Marica and Ferencz Tunyogi as assistant referees.

Joao Pedro Silva Pinheiro of Portugal will act as the fourth official. The VAR team includes Dennis Higler (Netherlands) and Catalin Sorin Popa (Romania).

Kovacs, who officiated Roma’s Conference League win and Atalanta’s Europa League triumph, has so far overseen only Italian victories in UEFA finals. When Inter walks out in Munich, they’ll hope that trend continues.

The final marks the 70th in Champions League history, and the first in Munich since 2012, when Chelsea beat Bayern on penalties.
