Matvey Safonov has addressed his situation at PSG after going three months without a competitive appearance.

The 26-year-old last played on May 25 when he kept a clean sheet and helped the French Champion defeat Reims 3-0 in the Coupe de France final

Safonov joined PSG from Krasnodar in 2024 for €20m [$23m] and played 17 matches across all competitions during the 2024/25 campaign.

While Russian was able to start the double digit game last term Southern Russia resident has failed to lodge any appearance this term.

Lucas Chevalier has quickly settled as the club’s new first-choice goalkeeper after replacing Gianluigi Donnarumma, who joined Manchester City.

The 22-year-old arrived from Lille on a five-year deal worth €40m [$46m] plus €15m [$17m] in bonuses and since his move, he has played four games across Ligue 1 and the UEFA Super Cup, totaling 360 minutes and keeping two clean sheets.

Safonov pushes back despite losing ground to Chevalier

Speaking to Local media during the international break, Safonov voiced his feelings about limited game time.

“It has been three months since I last played. I would like to play. The situation is different. I was expecting competition and I still expect it,” he said.

 

“My objective is to prove in every match and every training session that I deserve my place. If I get my chance, I will do my best to show that I am up to the task.”

Safonov also addressed his relationship with the club’s new number one. “We have great contact. There is a great atmosphere in training. All of the goalkeepers are formidable people,” he said [via Le Parisien]
