In the 23/24 season, Girona shocked the world by finishing third in La Liga and was in first at one point in the season. They did the double over Barcelona, beat Atletico Madrid, and qualified for the Champions League.

Now it seems that they are sinking as quickly as the rose as they suffered back-to-back batterings at the hands of Rayo Vallencano and Villarreal.

One is left to wonder what went wrong and are they in serious trouble of getting relegated this season.

Girona Downfall

When Girona had an amazing league campaign many expected them to lose plenty of those players but have a nice foundation as they are owned and backed by the City Football Group.

Instead, they lost almost all their key pieces and have yet to replace any of them. Their main man Savinho was sold to Manchester City, right back/centre back Eric Garcia's loan ended and he went back to Barcelona, left back Miguel Gutierrez was sold to Napoli, right back Yan Couto's loan ended and he went back to City, star midfielder Aleix Garcia went to Leverkusen and their leading goalscorer in Artem Dovbyk went to Roma.

As you can see, that's a lot of departures and the replacements Girona has brought in haven't been good enough at all. They played Champions League football for the first time in the club's history and they finished 33rd of 36 teams.

In the league, they finished 16th just a point above relegation which showed concerning signs of what was to come.

They had another lackluster summer window which didn't inspire that there would be a change heading into this season.

After a 5-0 defeat to Villarreal, it seems like Girona may have to face the reality of getting relegated.
