Barcelona are in the midst of preparing for the 2023/24 season as they look to retain their La Liga title and challenge for the Champions League.

Xavi's side beat rivals Real Madrid to the league title in 2022/23, conceding just 20 goals in the process. However, they were disappointing in Europe, finishing third in their Champions League group, before losing to Manchester United in the Europa League playoff round.

The Catalans have struggled financially in the last few seasons, leading them to focus heavily on the free transfer market, and they have already missed out on re-signing Lionel Messi due to their problems.

The Sporting News looks at the Barcelona players contracted for the 2023/24 season.

With Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba leaving, Xavi has lost a lot of valuable experience in his squad. This means the likes of Sergi Roberto, Marcos Alonso, and Marc-Andre ter Stegen will all need to step up.

Ansu Fati is set to stay with Barcelona despite some speculation over his future, while Ilkay Gundogan joins the Spanish giants following his success with Manchester City last season alongside Spanish centre-back Inigo Martinez.

How Barcelona were built

A lot of players on the Barcelona roster were promoted from their youth sides. Other such as Franck Kessie, Andreas Christensen and Gundogan were signed on free transfers by Xavi.

Ter Stegen is the longest serving player at the club, other than those from the academy. The German goalkeeper joined Barcelona in July, 2014 from Borussia Monchengladbach.
