The time of the year has rolled round once more for World Rugby to reveal their shortlist for the prestigious Women’s 15 Player of the Year award, one of the most coveted titles in the sport.
After nearly a month of women’s rugby being in the spotlight with the current Women’s Rugby World Cup, the list that World Rugby has announced is a true testament to the new and established trail blazers within the community.
England’s Ellie Kildunne won the award last year, and has proved the calibre of rugby that the title indicates this World Cup campaign with her sensational performances with the Red Roses, who will face Canada at the final on Saturday.
Who are nominated for Women’s 15s Player of the Year?
Sophie de Goede
The first athlete to make the list is Canada’s infamous lock Sophie de Goede. Despite coming back from a serious ACL injury this year, de Goede has quickly re-established her position as one of the best players in the world. A true jack-of-all-trades, the Canadian number four is equipped with barn-storming carries, an eagle eye on pitch, and most uniquely for her forward position, a lazer sharp boot that makes her Canada’s choice kicker.
Megan Jones
One of the Red Roses’ own, Megan Jones is a key force behind why they are world number one’s, and has rightfully earned her spot on the list. Scoring the final try of England’s semifinal against France, Jones is a machine on the field renowned for her ability to spot and dive through defensive breaks, as well as her selfless ability to set up tries for her teammates. Outside of just adding points to the scoreboard, she also has a mean tackle, making her a lethal opponent at every part of the pitch.
Jorja Miller
The Black Fern’s flanker is the youngest of the list at just 21 years old. Despite her youth, she has already been well decorated this year, earning the Women’s SVNS Player of the Year title in May. Despite sevens being her primary style, she has effortlessly shifted over to fifteens, scoring five tries over six matches. Miller is quickly becoming a household name, thanks to her explosive talent and ability to change the tide of a match in mere seconds.
When will the Women’s 15s Player of the Year be announced?
The winner of the award will be announced at the final of the Women’s Rugby World Cup 2025 in Twickenham, alongside other awards including Breakthrough Player of the Year, Coach of the Year and Referee of the Year.
