Nearly 3,000 athletes representing over 90 countries will compete in Beijing, China, in the 2022 Winter Olympics.

This will be the first time Beijing has hosted the Winter Olympics. Two nearby cities will also host athletes for outdoor sports, while Beijing will solely host the indoor ice sports.

Here's everything you need to know about the venues in Beijing, fan attendance and more.

Where are the Olympics in 2022?

The Olympics will take place in Beijing, China, this year. This is the second time Beijing has hosted the Olympics; it also hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics. This will be the first time Beijing or China in general will host the Winter Olympics.

No other cities in China have hosted the Summer or Winter Olympics.

Beijing Olympic venues

The Beijing venues are being reused from the 2008 Olympics, excluding the Big Air Shougang, which was built for freestyle skiing big air and snowboard big air.

The outdoor winter events will take place in Yanqing and Zhangjiakou, two cities bordering Beijing.

Are fans allowed at the Olympics?

Similar to the 2021 Tokyo Olympics, the 2022 Beijing Olympics will not allow international fans to attend the games.

In terms of Chinese residents attending the Olympics, only a selected amount of spectators were allowed to purchase tickets. The attendees must follow China's strict COVID-19 protocols.

What is the time difference in Beijing?

Beijing is 13 hours ahead of Eastern time. Most of the live games will take place at night or in the middle of the night for American viewers.

How much did the Olympics cost?

The 2022 Winter Olympic cost for Beijing was much lower than recent years. Their budget reached $3.9 billion, which compares to the $40 billion budget Beijing had in 2008 for the Summer Olympics. Most of the budget decreased since they were able to reuse some of the venues, and part of that is also due to the limited fans in attendance.

By comparison, the 2018 PyeongChang Winter Olympics cost $12.9 billion.

Olympic villages

Each of the three cities have separate Olympic villages. The ice sport athletes will be housed in Beijing Olympic Village, which will have around 2,300 beds in total. When the games end, these apartments will become public housing for rent.

The Yanqing village is set to mimic a mountain village, and it will host around 1,430 athletes and officials. The Zhangjiakou village hosts the most athletes and officials, around 2,640.
