For the third time in four postseasons, the Hurricanes and Bruins meet in the playoffs.

In the past, it has gone the Bruins' way. Boston swept Carolina in the 2019 Eastern Conference finals and then won in five games in the first round in 2020.

But this season, it's the Hurricanes who are the favorites. Carolina ended the season as the NHL's best defensive team, with Frederik Andersen and Antti Raanta teaming up for the William M. Jennings Trophy for the goalie tandem with the lowest goals-against average. Between those two in the pipes and the stellar play of the blue line, the Hurricanes are a tough team to crack.

However, Boston comes in as one of the hottest teams. Since New Year's Day, the Bruins are 37-16-3, with only the Avalanche and Panthers earning more points in that span. The core in Boston isn't getting any younger, and with Patrice Bergeron's contract up at the end of the season, this might be the final run for the Bruins in this window.

Carolina is looking to continue its success against Boston after sweeping the season series 3-0-0 and outscoring the boys from Beantown 16-1 in the process. But history is on the Bruins' side, and the club is looking to pull off the first-round upset.

The Hurricanes have to go into Game 1 without Andersen in net as he recovers from a lower-body injury. Raanta gets the call tonight against Linus Ullmark.
