With the 2025 NFL season approaching, the Tennessee Titans are beginning a new era with Cam Ward now under center. The former Miami Hurricanes quarterback was selected No. 1 overall at the 2025 NFL Draft as the Titans now look to build around their young signal caller.
During his lone season in Miami, Ward completed 67.2 percent of his passes while recording 4,313 passing yards, 39 passing touchdowns, and seven interceptions.
It's this production that led to the Titans selecting Ward, but in a recent interview, Titans general manager Mike Borgonzi shared in-depth details regarding the reasoning for choosing the 23-year-old.
How were the Titans sold on Cam Ward?
Borgonzi appeared on "Green Light with Chris Long," to break down how the Titans' front office was sold on making Ward their franchise quarterback.
"I think it was the arm talent," Borgonzi told Long. "He certainly had that—the arm angles. And he had this great spatial awareness, too, to throw guys open. I would be careful to compare him to [Patrick Mahomes], but some of the physical abilities, the arm strength, and some of the spatial awareness stuff really jumped out to me when I started to watch him."

While the physical traits are important, Borgonzi also shared the characteristics that don't show up in film that are important when deciding to select a quarterback.
"First opportunity was at the combine to meet him," Borgonzi added. "You can tell he's a confident kid, and he was smart. He's had a lot of reps in college."
It won't be an easy first NFL game for Ward as the Titans will face the Denver Broncos in Week 1. The Broncos led the NFL last season in sacks (63) and were second in the league in quarterback knockdowns (72), so Ward will get a significant test to see how his adaptation to the NFL is going.
