Since joining the San Francisco 49ers in 2022, superstar running back Christian McCaffrey has been an All-Pro, MVP candidate, Offensive Player of the Year, and Pro Bowler.
It's safe to say being dealt to San Francisco was one of the best moves that could have happened for McCaffrey's career. His 2024 campaign was underwhelming because he only appeared in four games due to injuries, but 2025 is off to a strong start with 530 total yards and two touchdowns through Week 4.
Despite having much success with the 49ers thus far, the 29-year-old recently revealed he thought he was dealt to the Los Angeles Rams back in 2022 before the trade that landed him in San Francisco.
"My agent called me at 11:15 PM. I thought I was getting traded to the Rams," McCaffrey said on the Kittle Things podcast. "He was like, 'Hey, look, dude, this is going to happen.' He called me, and he's like, 'You're going to the Niners,' and before John Lynch or Kyle Shannahan could call me, George [Kittle] calls me."
The Rams hoisted the Vince Lombardi Trophy the year prior, meaning a move for McCaffrey would have signified an immense desire to repeat as champions. Cam Akers ended up being L.A.'s leading rusher in the 2022 season with 786 rushing yards and seven rushing touchdowns.
The Rams went just 5-12 this season and finished third in the NFC West behind the Seattle Seahawks (9-8) and the division-winning 49ers (13-4).
McCaffrey is still missing the ultimate award, a Super Bowl. He's reached the postseason twice with the 49ers, falling short in the NFC Championship in 2022 and in the Super Bowl to the Kansas City Chiefs a year later.
With the 49ers off to a 3-1 start this season despite all of their injuries, it's plausible to assume they'll be in contention once again.
