All eyes were on Mac Jones and the San Francisco 49ers on Thursday. The team was looking to bounce back from a tough Week 4 loss against Trevor Lawrence and the Jacksonville Jaguars and hand the Los Angeles Rams their second loss of their season.
San Francisco was able to get out to an early 14-0 lead thanks to a receiving TD from Jake Tonges and a rushing score from Christian McCaffery. However, Los Angeles got on the board with a Kyren Williams TD.
A couple of field goals from Los Angeles and a sturdy defense kept them in this ballgame. They were able to push the game into overtime, and after a 49ers field goal, they would end up losing when Kyren Williams was stuffed at the line on a fourth-and-1, and San Francisco was able to escape with the victory by a score of 26-23.
49ers' Mac Jones receives high praise from Matt Ryan following Thursday's scrappy win
Mac Jones was exceptional in the Week 5 win. He went 33 for 49 with 342 yards and two touchdowns. This is easily his best game this season, and he received high praise from former NFL MVP Matt Ryan, via NFL on CBS.
"Return of the Mac," said Ryan, referencing the 1996 song from Mark Morrison. "That's been the story of San Francisco's September, The Return of the Mac, and Mac Jones. There's a lyric in the second verse. They say, 'So I'm back up in the game, running things to keep my swing, letting all the people know that I'm back to run the show.' I think that's the message that the Niners sent on Thursday night despite all of the injuries."
Ryan could not have been more impressed with how Jones and the 49ers handled themselves. They were out some big names like Jauan Jennings and Ricky Pearsall, but Jones still found a way to win. Now, they set themselves up nicely for a game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with the extra rest from playing on Thursday.
