The San Francisco 49ers find themselves in an unanticipated situation after agreeing to meet Brandon Aiyuk's financial demands.
It'll be interesting to see what unfolds for Aiyuk and the 49ers moving forward, as it seems very likely that he'll have to be released.
CBS Sports reports that several elements might influence the situation, but Joel Corry of the publication believes the most favorable outcome for San Francisco would be securing a trade for him.
A desirable outcome would involve the 49ers exchanging Aiyuk. The return for this transaction would not remotely approach the second- and third-round selections that Pittsburgh was said to be prepared to offer for Aiyuk before his 2024 contract renewal with the 49ers.
Aiyuk's performance was unlike that of the player who secured second-team All-Pro recognition in 2023 prior to his injury. In March, the 49ers acquired a fifth-round selection from the Washington Commanders in exchange for wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who participated in 15 contests during the previous season...
“Whether the 49ers trade Aiyuk in a timely manner or release him without a post-June 1 designation, there is going to be $29,585,843 of dead money, a salary cap charge for a player no longer on a team's roster, from his $23 million signing bonus and the $22.855 million 2025 option bonus,” he wrote.
As Corry mentioned earlier, securing a trade partner for Aiyuk could prove difficult, given his salary and past injuries. Should the 49ers receive anything in exchange, it would probably amount to little more than a late-round selection.
