82 days until the first preseason game. 65 days until mandatory training camp. 3 days until OTA’s begin. This is the time that separates today from the very important dates for the Pittsburgh Steelers, and this time may just separate the team itself. The reason why this could happen? Aaron Rodgers.
While everyone is aware of the saga behind the Aaron Rodgers signing, many may not realize the divide that can ensue with drama like this at the head of the team. Not only is it imperative that new quarterbacks learn an offense in the offense, it is crucial for them to build relationships in the locker room.
NFL on CBS host, Ryan Wilson, said, “How can you go through OTA’s and the mini-camp process and maybe even training camp without a quarterback, and by that I mean Aaron Rodgers…it feels like Aaron’s just going to show up when Aaron’s ready. Is that the best way to prepare for a new season with a bunch of new teammates?”
This question may seem very elementary, but it is something that Steeler fans must be wondering at this point. Likewise, these questions (even if they aren’t directly reported) could start creeping into the locker room. As a reminder, the Steelers have had recent locker room issues regarding quarterbacks and position players seemingly taking sides: Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, and Diontae Johnson.
Ran Carthon responded to Ryan saying, “Absolutely not…I think it speaks volumes for the rest of the team for a guy that you’re going to be counting on as your quarterback is not on the field with you right now when this is the time of the year that you start to build that bond.”
Although there are negative signs paralleled to the waiting game of Rodgers, we have heard teammates being supportive about the potential of working alongside the future hall of famer. Alex Highsmith has stated that the team is really excited to have him if he signs, and that he is not a distraction at all. Whether Rodgers signs today, tomorrow, or 24 hours before mini-camp, it will be interesting to see how the Steelers locker room responds and gels under limited time together.
