What Eagles' OT loss means for NFC East, NFL playoff picture image

The Philadelphia Eagles are a bit lucky.

The NFC East isn't as strong a division as everyone expected this season.

That's good news for the Eagles, who lost in overtime on Monday night to the Chargers.

With the defeat, the Eagles fell to 8-5 on the season.

But they're still well clear of the second-place Dallas Cowboys, who are 6-6-1.

The Eagles, if they were to keep losing, would be in trouble in the wild card standings.

But they've still got plenty to play for, because the division is well within their control.

They could lose once more before even worrying at all about if Dallas can catch up with them.

It was starting to feel like a classic, grind-it-out sort of win for the Eagles.

But then Jalen Hurts, with the Eagles in field goal range and trying to score a game-winning touchdown, threw a tipped pass that got intercepted.

It was a miserable night for Hurts, but because of the divisional setup, the Eagles probably won't even be haunted by it.

Hurts might still have some bad dreams, of course. That two-turnovers-on-one-play moment won't be a highlight that Hurts wants to watch back.

But if he can right the ship, the Eagles will still be just fine to be in the playoffs and have a chance to defend their Super Bowl title.

It has to be better than this night, but they've still got some wiggle room.
