Today, Stephen A. Smith took a break from his usual criticisms to offer praise, directing it toward someone he believes is not getting the recognition he deserves: Philadelphia Eagles quarterback and Super Bowl LIX MVP Jalen Hurts.
Smith argues that Hurts is one of the NFL's most underrated players, often overlooked despite his winning record and football IQ.
Smith emphasized Hurts' ability to succeed despite instability around him. On ESPN's "First Take," he said,
"Coach Nick Sirianni has had four different offensive coordinators and four different play callers in the last four years, yet Hurts is 43 and 12 as a starting quarterback, including postseason."
He added, "No matter the situation, no matter the circumstances, no matter the adversity... he figures it out."
Stephen A. also praised Hurts' football intellect, noting, "When you have somebody as great as Peyton Manning talking about your football IQ, your passion to learn and be above the crowd, that’s something we have to hold on to."
Hurts benefits from a strong supporting cast with Saquon Barkley in the backfield and top wide receivers AJ Brown and DeVonta Smith, plus one of the NFL's best offensive lines.
Yet, Smith argued, "We should be talking about Jalen Hurts in a far more complimentary fashion than we have. I don’t think we have, which is why underrated applies."
Super Bowl LIX brought Jalen Hurts overdue recognition, yet many still overlook his achievements. In the 2025 season, Hurts will aim for another championship run, one he hopes will finally earn him the recognition he deserves.
