Last season, Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert had one of the best years by a rookie in NFL history.

Starting 15 games, he became the all-time rookie record-holder in passing touchdowns (31), total touchdowns (36), completions (396), games with 300-plus passing yards (eight) and three-plus touchdowns (six). Though Los Angeles finished with a 6-9 record, Herbert proved he could grow into one of the best signal-callers in the NFL.

On the other hand, the Washington Football Team will be retooling at quarterback, as Alex Smith retired. Washington signed veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick in March of 2021, and he will start for the team in its Week 1 opener against the Chargers, according to coach Ron Rivera.

Washington will also look to make significant steps with its defense, as starting defensive ends Chase Young and Montez Sweat return along with tackles Jonathan Allen and Daron Payne. It also drafted Kentucky linebacker Jamin Davis, who was renowned for his aggressiveness and fluidity as a player.

Conversely, Los Angeles will look to improve its 23rd-ranked scoring defense with the addition of coach Brandon Staley, who led the Rams to the top-rated defense last season as their defensive coordinator.

Washington and the Chargers will be meeting for the 12th time in their history. Washington leads the all-time series 7-4 but has lost four of the last five meetings, including the latest matchup on Dec. 10, 2017.
