For years, the Saints managed to dodge the dread of rebuilding the team but this spring, the choice may have been ripped right out of their hands.

In May, quarterback Derek Carr stunned the football world by hanging up his cleats, just two weeks after the franchise drafted Louisville signal-caller Tyler Shough in the second round as his heir apparent.

Looking back, that 2-0 start in 2024 was smoke and mirrors, fueled by some flashy play-action bombs and soft competition. Wins over the Panthers and a Cowboys team that couldn’t stop digging itself 20-point holes at home painted a prettier picture than reality. Still, after finishing 2023 with a 4-1 surge, fans could be forgiven for buying into the hype.

But the good times didn’t last. A couple of blown leads against the Eagles and Falcons quickly dropped New Orleans to 2-2, and then came the gut punch — Carr went down in Kansas City, a place that had haunted him before, during a 26-13 defeat.

That injury forced the Saints to roll out rookie Spencer Rattler sooner than expected. His ill-timed throw left Chris Olave vulnerable, leading to a concussion that sidelined the star wideout against Tampa Bay. The Bucs made the most of it, hanging 51 points in the Superdome. Adding insult to injury, explosive playmaker Rashid Shaheed was also lost, stripping the offense of another key weapon.

Even though the defense stayed healthier than its offensive counterpart, it failed to live up to expectations, stumbling instead of shouldering the load. What started as optimism quickly spiraled into the harsh reality that the Saints might finally be staring down that long-avoided rebuild.

Here is everything you need to know in order to listen to Saints games on the radio this season.
