Lamar Jackson fastest QB to 5,000 rushing yards: Ravens star passes Michael Vick for NFL record image

Lamar Jackson has been compared to Michael Vick from the moment he took his first snap in the NFL because of his ability to beat teams with his electrifying speed.

His 4.34 40-yard dash time was nearly identical to Vick's 4.33. His big-play prowess and creativity to make something out of nothing when things broke down were reminiscent of Vick's.

Jackson plays quarterback like he's being controlled by a "Madden" gamer on the couch — a playstyle that Vick made famous as he rushed for an NFL quarterback record 6,109 yards in his career.

But in the Ravens' "Sunday Night Football" matchup against the Chargers, Jackson surpassed his counterpart Vick to become the fastest quarterback to break 5,000 rushing yards in NFL history.

For more on Jackson's new NFL record and his pursuit of Vick's all-time QB rushing record, The Sporting News has you covered below.

Lamar Jackson passes Mike Vick for fastest QB to 5,000 rushing yards

Jackson only needed 82 games to crack 5,000 rushing yards — the fewest by a quarterback in NFL history by far.

Vick needed 104 games to hit the 5,000-yard mark, while other all-time great rushing QBs like Cam Newton and Russell Wilson needed 129 and 175 games, respectively.

This shouldn't come as much of a surprise, considering Jackson's 61.4 rushing yards per game are the most in NFL history for a quarterback. He has set a new precedent for running QBs over his six NFL seasons, doing things that even a historic dual-threat like Vick couldn't achieve.

Jackson set the single-season NFL rushing record for a QB during his 2019 MVP season, dashing for 1,206 yards. He is the only QB in NFL history to have multiple 1,000-yard rushing seasons, doing so in back-to-back years in 2019 and 2020.

While injuries have caused him to slow down over the last couple of seasons, Jackson is currently on pace for over 825 rushing yards this year and he already has the same number of rushing touchdowns this year (5) as he did in his past two seasons combined.

Most rushing yards by a QB in NFL history

Jackson is in hot pursuit of Vick's record but for now, Vick still holds the title for most rushing yards by a quarterback with 6,109.

At his current pace, though, it is only a matter of time before Jackson surpasses all three quarterbacks ahead of him — Wilson, Newton and Vick.

Most rushing touchdowns by a QB in NFL history

Even being as lethal as Jackson is as a runner, he is nowhere near Newton's all-time record for rushing touchdowns by a quarterback.

In fact, Bills star QB Josh Allen has the second-most rushing touchdowns by a QB in NFL history, with Jackson trailing Newton by over 40 rushing TDs.
