When a former Super Bowl champion, Trent Dilfer, took the head coaching position at UAB, it was with the expectation that he would build the Blazers into a powerhouse program.
What he has turned this program into is a joke, not just on the field but off. The Blazers poor play on the field and his flippant responses when he is called out have turned many people off.
No one is saying UAB is on the same level as Alabama or Auburn, but under Dilfer, they aren’t even on the same level as Jacksonville State or Troy.
Even South Alabama has had better seasons recently than UAB. The problem is Dilfer, according Al.com sports writer Jospehn Goodman, who put Dilfer on blast after the Blazers struggled to beat Alabama State, 52-42.
“Dilfer is a great talker. That’s why he worked at ESPN. It doesn’t translate to the field, though. UAB is in for a long season, and there’s no limit to the amount of yards Navy will pile up against the Blazers next week. Alabama State accounted for 514 yards of total offense behind a brilliant performance by quarterback Andrew Body.”
This was a defense, according to Dilfer, that would be better this year. Clearly, at least at the beginning of this season, he was wrong.
Even former head coach Bill Clark’s son, Jacob, called out Dilfer in a tweet Thursday night.
“Im quiet about UAB most of the time, but you know what screw it
These announcers always say give Dilfer time because it takes time to turn a program around
What??My dad had UAB winning 9 +games every year when they couldn’t go to a bowl game. Show some respect for what we did.”
In two years, as Blazers head coach, they have gone 4-8 and 3-9, and this year looks like it’s going to be about the same, which means the Blazers may be seeking a new head coach soon.
