The Dallas Cowboys entered the 2025 offseason with major question marks at both wide receiver and running back.
The team addressed the former concern with the trade for George Pickens, but Dallas' running backs room remains a concern, especially after the departure of Rico Dowdle, the team's leading rusher from last season.
The Cowboys signed Javonte Williams and Miles Sanders before drafting Jaydon Blue in April, but Williams and Sanders were both disappointments in their previous stops, and Blue is unproven.
One player the Cowboys should keep an eye on as a possible trade target is New York Jets running back Breece Hall, who was recently suggested as a potential option for Dallas before the 2025 campaign by Sports Illustrated's Conor Orr.
Orr predicts that Hall will get traded, and he listed the Cowboys as one of the possible suitors for the electric playmaker.
"The Jets will trade Breece Hall before the season opener," Orr wrote. "A handful of running back-needy teams — the Bengals, Chiefs, Texans and Cowboys — will get through camp and search to upgrade at the position, while the Jets will seek to pair Braelon Allen and Isaiah Davis with a veteran still on the market who is looking to sign closer to the start of the regular season. Maybe Aaron Glenn’s former player, Jamaal Williams?"
Trade speculation has been swirling around Hall all offseason long.
Not only is he set to enter the final year of his $9 million rookie contract, but head coach Aaron Glenn said the Jets could use a three-man committee at the running back position, which Hall isn't likely to be pleased with, especially in a contract year.
While Hall had a disappointing year in 2024 after entering the season with a ton of hype, he still managed to tally over 1,300 yards from scrimmage (876 rushing, 483 receiving) and scored eight total touchdowns (five rushing).
Making those numbers more impressive is the fact that the Jets had a dysfunctional offense that featured a swiss-cheese offensive line and a seemingly diminished Aaron Rodgers.
Hall could really thrive in Dallas.
The Cowboys have one of the best one-two punches at wide receiver in the NFL in Pickens and CeeDee Lamb that will force opposing defenses to drop extra help into coverage, which will give Hall more room to run than he's ever had in his career.
Hall also adds another element to Dallas' offense with his ability to score from anywhere on the field, both as a rusher and pass-catcher. Nobody in the team's backfield has that kind of ability, which makes Hall a significant upgrade.
When it comes to trade compensation, Hall shouldn't cost more than a third-round pick, which would be a small price to pay for a player who could massively upgrade Dallas' offense in 2025.
