The New York Jets had a perfect chance to get their first win in NFL Week 4,
After an 0-3 start, the Jets went down to Miami to take on the Dolphins on Monday Night Football. The Dolphins also entered the night winless, and had looked mediocre at best so far, so it seemed reasonable that the Jets could escape with a victory.
Instead, the Jets ended up losing 27-21 and falling to 0-4 on the season.
After the game, running back Breece Hall was shockingly honest about his team's struggles to close out games.
“Teams shoot themselves in the foot then we come back and shoot ourselves in the head," explained the running back, who also noted that that could be said about three of the team's four losses.
It's definitely a reasonable point made by Hall. Against the Dolphins, the Jets turned the ball over three times. Justin Fields, Isaiah Williams, and Braelon Allen each lost fumbles, and the Jets' defense was unable to force any turnovers of its own to make up for it.
Additionally, the Jets were penalized a whopping 13 times for 101 yards, It's hard to beat anybody, even an 0-3 team, when you lose the turnover battle and give up over 100 yards in penalties.
The Jets have lost the turnover battle in each of their four games so far and are also 23rd in penalties per game. Sloppy play like this isn't uncommon under a first-year head coach, but it's still undeniably frustrating.
The only loss the Jets have that wasn't close was Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills. In that game, the team lost 30-10. However, the team lost by two points, two points, and six points in their other three losses.
As for Hall, he's had two nice games and two subpar games so far. The former second-round pick rushed for 107 yards in the first game of the season, and then rushed for 81 in Week 4. In Weeks 2 and 3, Hall had just 50 total rushing yards.
Hall has had a couple of nice seasons with the Jets, but he has never quite lived up to the RB1 expectations the team has for him. In 2024, Hall played in 16 games and rushed for 876 yards and five touchdowns.
The next opportunity for Hall and the Jets to get a win will be in Week 5 against the Dallas Cowboys. After that, the Jets have games against the Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, and Cincinnati Bengals.
