The New Orleans Saints have endured a perplexing offseason, largely due to the quarterback position.
Despite a new coaching staff coming in, the Saints opted to reload rather than rebuild, leading to a major Derek Carr contract restructure. Carr then announced his surprise retirement just a few months later.
Now, there has been some buzz about potentially trading away star wideout Chris Olave, which perfectly encapsulates what point of the NFL offseason we've arrived at.
Regardless, the Saints could use some reinforcements in the wide receiver corps for rookie Tyler Shough, who seems to have the upper hand in the quarterback competition.
Meanwhile, Logan Ulrich of NFL Trade Rumors predicted the Saints could be a landing spot for five-time Pro Bowl wideout Amari Cooper.
"A reunion with the Raiders could be worth keeping in mind, as Las Vegas could use more weapons on offense. However, the Saints feel like the best combination of need and familiarity for Cooper as things stand right now. Multiple Saints coaches know Cooper well from his time in Dallas, including HC Kellen Moore and OC Doug Nussmeier. That should give both sides a comfort level about the fit and the scheme," Ulrich wrote.
New Orleans has roughly $28 million to work with in terms of salary-cap space, according to Spotrac, so the money is certainly there for general manager Mickey Loomis to make a move.
With Olave set to reprise his role as the No. 1 target, the Saints have Rashid Shaheed and Brandin Cooks behind him on the depth chart.
Whether the Saints want to bring in another aging veteran remains to be seen but from the perspective of positional needs, this union at least makes a bit of sense on paper.
