The New Orleans Saints saw veteran quarterback Derek Carr suddenly retire from the NFL on Saturday as he dealt with another injury.
It marked the end of a solid NFL career for Carr, but it also brought the Saints' immediate quarterback questions into the spotlight. Currently, the Saints have Jake Haener, Spencer Rattler, and 25-year-old rookie Tyler Shough on the roster.
At this point, neither of them are exciting options for New Orleans and first-year head coach Kellen Moore. On top of that, the free agency market is underwhelming with QB options at this point, although one big name remains: Aaron Rodgers.
Do the Saints make a run at Rodgers? Since the Carr retirement move, Rodgers' name has been pegged a lot to New Orleans, and now a former NFL QB also expressed that possibility.
During a recent episode of The Outta Pocket podcast with Robert Griffin III, Griffin said the Saints need to go after Rodgers.
“The New Orleans Saints, Kellen Moore, Mickey Loomis, they need to call Aaron Rodgers,” Griffin said. "Not for Mickey Loomis, not for Kellen Moore. But they need to call Aaron Rodgers for Alvin Kamara. They need to call Aaron Rodgers for Demario Davis. They need to call Aaron Rodgers for Cam Jordan. They need to call Aaron Rodgers for Brandin Cooks. They need to call Aaron Rodgers for Justin Reed. They need to call Aaron Rodgers for the honeybadger himself, Tyrann Mathieu."
It's an interesting idea, and adding Rodgers to a team with a veteran presence such as this does make sense rather than going with a younger, less-developed quarterback.
“The reason I say that is because those veterans don’t have time to go through a rebuild. They don’t have much time left on their clock when it comes to NFL years," Griffin continued.
Of course, nobody knows when Rodgers will reveal his decision, and the link with the Pittsburgh Steelers has been ongoing. But, now there seems to be another viable option on the market, and maybe Rodgers decides to go to New Orleans instead of Pittsburgh, although he might not even play in 2025 at all.
Still, it's a call worth making for the Saints.
