Patriots' Marcus Jones set all-time NFL record on punt return TD image

To qualify for the NFL's all-time punt return average leaderboard, a player needs to have made at least 75 punt returns in his career.

Marcus Jones of the New England Patriots entered Monday night with an average that would've been atop the record books, except with only 74 returns.

On his 75th return, Jones moved to the top of the all-time leaderboard in style. He went back on a punt from the New York Giants, received it at his own 6-yard line, then went 94 yards for a touchdown.

After two other solid returns on the night, Jones' career punt return average now sits at 14.6 yards per return, which is now officially the NFL record.

Two players had previously been tied atop the board at 12.8 yards per punt return: George McAfee and Jack Christiansen, both old-timers who played before 1960.

Some notable names also in the top-10 include No. 7 Desmond Howard (11.9) and No. 9 Devin Hester (11.7).

The only other active player in the top-10 is Devin Duvernay, who is tied with Hester in the ninth spot with 11.7 yards per punt return.

Jones, a cornerback when he's not returning, would've ranked in first on his 75th return even if he hadn't taken it back to the house. He had entered the night with a solid enough lead that it wasn't going away at that moment.

But with that extra long return, Jones has opened up some cushion. As long as he stays solid, he'll have a chance to maintain this NFL record for a long time.
