The New England Patriots know that second-year quarterback Drake Maye is entering a critical season and needs many playmakers around him.
New England signed veteran free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs this offseason and took wide receiver Kyle Williams out of Washington State in the NFL Draft.
The Patriots weren't done adding receiving help after the draft ended, and Brent Sobleski from Bleacher Report thinks New England's undrafted free agent Efton Chism III is the team's most exciting addition.
"New England Patriots fans yearn for the days when Wes Welker, Danny Amendola and Julian Edelman dominated from the slot," Sobleski wrote. "Stefon Diggs could assume that role this year after signing in free agency. But someone with Efton Chism III's skill set could also mesh well within the new/old offensive scheme. 'He decelerates at a very rapid rate,' NBC Sports' Phil Perry said after seeing Chism at the Patriots' rookie camp. 'So he'll be running a crosser, catch it, and stop on a dime. It just creates separation for himself in that way. Just somebody to keep an eye on given Josh McDaniels and his history with that receiver position, and what he's valued there in the past.' The Eastern Washington product caught 204 passes for 2,243 yards and 21 touchdowns over the last two seasons. He can shake defenders loose in short areas and get open for his quarterback."
Chism should have a chance to compete for a job out of training camp this fall, and if he does, he could make an impact on the team as soon as Week 1.
