The Vikings have retained much of the core that surprised the league in 2024, finishing 14-3 with Sam Darnold leading the way as quarterback. But Minnesota suffered a disappointing loss in the playoffs to the Rams.
However, with Darnold walking in free agency this offseason, Minnesota have placed their faith in J.J. McCarthy, the team’s top pick in the 2024 NFL Draft who was sidelined with a knee injury last year. The talented 22-year-old quarterback though, has been handed a loaded offense featuring the likes of Justin Jefferson, Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and a revamped offensive line.
Head coach Kevin O'Connell, the 2024 Coach of the Year, has a proven track record with quarterbacks, but his three seasons in Minnesota have been rollercoasters: the Vikings went 13-4 in 2022, then dropped to 7-10 in 2023, and bounced back with a 14-win season in 2024.
They are potentially part of the NFL's toughest division after three playoff teams emerged from the NFC North in 2024. Much of their 2025 campaign will depend on whether McCarthy can replicate the high level of play Darnold delivered last season.
