The Los Angeles Chargers have an interesting situation at the running back position with veteran Najee Harris and rookie Omarion Hampton.
Harris was signed to a one-year, $5.25 million contract in free agency and was the clear-cut starter at the time. However, that all changed in April, when the Chargers drafted Hampton.
Taken with a first-round pick, Hampton is going to see playing time in his first season with the Chargers, but how much remains to be seen, especially early on.
Here's what we know about who will be starting for Week 1 and what the touch distribution between Harris and Hampton might look like.
Is Najee Harris or Omarion Hampton starting?
Head coach Jim Harbaugh revealed on Wednesday that Harris is expected to start in the Week 1 game against the Kansas City Chiefs, although he admitted he was not sure how the touches and overall playing time would be divvied up.
"[Harris] says he's ready, and he looks ready to go," Harbaugh said. "Really hard to predict play counts. He's going to play football and have at it. That's the mindset."
Just because Harris is starting doesn't mean he's going to dominate touches. It just means he's going to be on the field for the first play.
Of course, Harris missed a huge chunk of the offseason with an eye injury sustained in a fireworks accident in July, so it's possible the Chargers will work him in slowly.
If that happens, Hampton will see the majority of work. But if Harris is a full go in this game, which appears to be the case, the best Hampton can hope for is a 50/50 split.
Unfortunately, there isn't much clarity in terms of how things will shake out with this backfield. For our fantasy football people out there, you're probably best off keeping both on the bench in Week 1.
