Indianapolis Colts general manager Chris Ballard shared on Wednesday the team put in one single waiver claim.

According to Adam Schefter, that claim was successful as the Colts picked up linebacker Chad Muma off waivers from the Jaguars.

Muma adds the linebacker depth that Indianapolis so desperately needed. A former third-round pick in 2022, Muma played three seasons in the AFC South with the Jaguars, playing in 50 games with just seven starts.

But with Jacksonville’s recent regime change, Jaguars’ general manager James Gladstone opted to keep his fourth-round pick from this past April, Jack Kiser, over Muma, officially putting an end to the Trent Baalke era.

Ballard believes Muma can contribute on special teams and defensively at both linebacker spots.

“We liked him coming out of Wyoming,” Ballard said, adding his excitement that they were awarded Muma.

As for where Muma fits into the roster, the Colts kept four linebackers on their initial 53-man roster: Zaire Franklin, Joe Bachie, Cameron McGrone and Segun Olubi. Jaylon Carlies is also on injured reserve with a designation to return, meaning he’ll be back after a minimum of four games.

By default, Olubi could be the casualty if the Colts want to make a like-for-like change. But Ballard did hint that he wants to keep adding at linebacker, opening up the possibility that a player elsewhere on the roster could be the one to go.

“We knew we wanted to add another guy,” he said. “We’re going to bring some other guys in.”

One of those players who could potentially become an addition is Anthony Walker Jr., who played in 57 games for the Colts between 2017 and 2020.
