Old Man (Philip) River(s) is making one of the most unexpected comebacks in NFL history, as the 44-year-old is signing with the Indianapolis Colts following Daniel Jones being lost for the season due to an Achilles injury.
And while the eight-time Pro Bowler is signing to the practice squad, it certainly looks like the Colts are preparing as if Rivers will start in Seattle against the Seahawks in Week 15. So with that in mind, where does Rivers fall in the quarterback hierarchy? That may be subjective, but it's safe to say he is better than these current quarterbacks.
J.J. McCarthy, Minnesota Vikings
Ah, poor J.J. He threw three touchdowns in a shutout win over the Washington Commanders on Sunday and actually played fine. Unfortunately, one game against an old, bad defense doesn't make up for the four games in which his QBR was lower than 23.
Geno Smith, Las Vegas Raiders
A lot of Geno Smith Haters doubted the Raiders this season. And honestly, great call from the haters - they stink, and so has Smith. He's thrown 14 interceptions this season, and has had a QBR lower than 26 seven times.
Whomever the Jets start
Justin Fields, Tyrod Taylor, Brady Cook - the holy trinity of quarterback play that will make fans want to stick their heads in an oven.
Kirk Cousins, Atlanta Falcons
Cousins has had a tremendous career, but we've reached the Patrick Ewing in an Orlando Magic uniform portion of his tenure as an NFL quarterback. In his six appearances, he has yet to post a QBR of 41 or higher, and has thrown just three touchdowns.
Shedeur Sanders, Cleveland Browns
Oh, this will bring out the pitchforks from the conspiracy theorists and single cat-ladies. Yes, Sanders is coming off a strong performance against the Tennessee Titans. Let's be real, though - if the Browns were starting Rivers from Week 1, their record looks better than it does now. Sanders is improving, and I hope he has a long, successful career, but right now he isn't better than Rivers.
