Packers break five-year curse with win over Commanders, highlighting team's new identity image

The Green Bay Packers made a major move for Micah Parsons just a week before the NFL season kicked off. That decision is already paying dividends, as it not only strengthened their defense but also complicated future negotiations for one of their division rivals, the Detroit Lions—especially in light of Parsons’ record-breaking contract.

“The Packers might have gotten a double whammy out of this. Micah Parsons’ new deal — at $47M per year — could directly impact the division rival Lions, who are actively negotiating with Aidan Hutchinson. Parsons and Green Bay just blew the doors off the market. We’ll see if it ends up affecting it or not,” NFL insider Ari Meirov posted.

In Week 2 against the Washington Commanders, Parsons showed exactly why Green Bay made the aggressive move to acquire him.

“Micah Parsons was even more impactful in his second Packers game, consistently disrupting the timing of the Commanders’ offense, which didn’t get anything going until midway through the second half. A quick glance at his relatively meager stats (two tackles, 0.5 sacks) tells nothing of his dominance, drawing three flags (one declined) and giving the Commanders’ tackles fits,” NFL.com’s Eric Edholm wrote.

Now sitting at 2-0, the Packers look dominant on the defensive side of the ball. The chemistry is clearly clicking, and the team is rolling. On Thursday, they accomplished something they hadn’t done in five seasons.

“In past four days, Packers beat last year's NFC runnerup and NFC North champions by a combined score of 54-31. They open their season 2-0 for first time since 2020. A dominant start,” Packers beat writer Ryan Wood posted.

This moment proves that the Packers are back. Even in a division that includes Minnesota and Detroit, it’s Green Bay that looks like the early favorite to win. The defense has reached a new level, and the offense isn’t far behind. It's a great sign for the Packers, who now look to go 3-0 next weekend against the Cleveland Browns.

Green Bay is once again a legitimate Super Bowl contender—and they know it. They understood the impact one move on the defensive line could make. Now, that single acquisition has helped the Packers do something they haven’t done in years.
