When the Green Bay Packers traded for Micah Parsons on Thursday, many fans began dreaming of one thing: the Super Bowl. Packers supporters believe their team has suddenly become one of the top contenders for the Vince Lombardi Trophy in the 2025 season. But will that happen this soon? Former NFL MVP Cam Newton doesn't think so.
He remains highly skeptical. On ESPN's "First Take" on Friday, Newton bluntly said, "Don't even think that they're the best team in their division." He argued that the Packers are still not better than the Detroit Lions, the Philadelphia Eagles' key NFC rival.
"You're not willing to take Detroit Lions over Green Bay Packers. So no, they're not the top team," Newton said. While acknowledging that the Packers are among the youngest teams in the NFL and Parsons himself is still a young star with room for growth, Newton cautions fans against expecting instant Super Bowl contention.
"No, not so fast. I'm not going for that," Newton added.
Newton sees the trade as a foundation rather than a finished product. According to the former Carolina Panthers QB, within three years, the Packers could evolve into contenders.
"They have all kinds of young talent and combinations to build upon. But they still have to perform," he noted.
Newton delivered a cold splash of reality for the Packers and their fans. While many expect to see Parsons make an immediate impact next season, that outcome is far from guaranteed. The team and its supporters will need to be patient.
