TL;DR
- Frank Ragnow will not return to the Detroit Lions after failing his physical due to a Grade 3 hamstring strain.
- Ragnow's comeback attempt was intended to bolster the Lions' offensive line for the remainder of the season.
- The injury prevents Ragnow from playing this year, and his future in 2026 remains uncertain.
- Detroit's offensive line situation will remain unchanged for the rest of the current season.
Frank Ragnow will not be coming out of retirement for the Detroit Lions after all.
The Lions announced on Saturday that Ragnow was diagnosed with a Grade 3 hamstring strain that will prevent him from coming back and playing this year.
It remains uncertain whether Ragnow intends to play in 2026, but the phrasing of the Lions' official announcement suggests this outcome is unlikely.
"Frank Ragnow reported to our facility yesterday and went through the normal process of meetings. Unfortunately, during the routine meeting with our medical team, Frank failed his physical," The Lions said in a statement.
An examination by medical professionals identified a Grade 3 hamstring injury, which will prevent his involvement for the rest of the current season. Consequently, Frank won't be returning to the Lions.
"Frank has always been a team-first guy and is a true warrior. He will forever be a Lion," the statement concluded.
Ragnow announced his retirement in June, citing health concerns, following several years of playing through numerous injuries. This week, the four-time Pro Bowler made the decision to end his retirement.
This represents a significant setback for The Lions, who had anticipated strengthening their offensive front. The situation is also difficult as Ragnow's comeback was expected to inject renewed energy into the whole squad.
With Ragnow back in the lineup, Graham Glasgow would shift to guard, a position currently occupied by Kayode Awosika due to Christian Mahogany's injury.
Now, it'll be status quo for Detroit's group upfront for the rest of the season.
