The Denver Broncos have been one of the NFL’s strongest performers this season. Tied for the league’s best record at 8–2, Denver has surged back into contention after a sluggish 1–2 start. The team has now won seven straight games, including a road victory over the defending champion Philadelphia Eagles.
Despite their record, the Broncos have made a habit of winning close games. Five of their eight victories have come by four points or fewer, including last Thursday’s 10–7 defensive slugfest against the Oakland Raiders. Denver’s success has been largely driven by its defense, which ranks third in both points allowed per game and total yards allowed per game. The Broncos also lead the NFL in fewest touchdowns allowed this season, giving up just 15.
Offensively, however, the picture is less dominant. Denver sits 13th in total offense and 18th in passing yards per game — production that has been steady but far from elite. The most surprising statistic? The Broncos lead the NFL in punts.
That figure might sound concerning for a team sitting atop the standings, but it speaks more to head coach Sean Payton’s confidence in his defense than offensive inefficiency. Denver has repeatedly trusted its defense to protect slim leads, and so far, that approach has paid off.
The Broncos will look to extend their winning streak and prove their defensive formula can hold up against elite competition when they face the Kansas City Chiefs in an AFC West showdown on Sunday before heading into their Week 12 bye.
