The Denver Broncos slid Matt Peart into the spot normally occupied by Ben Powers on the offensive line and that experiment lasted one game. On Tuesday, the team placed Peart on injured reserve.
Peart will be required to miss at least the next four games, but Broncos insider Mike Klis reports that Peart has a significant knee injury, so he may be out for much longer. Broncos fans likely won't be too upset that he is out of the starting lineup, as he was called for three penalties against the New York Jets last week.
With Powers likely to miss several more weeks, the Broncos are going to need a new player to fill in.
Alex Palczewski will likely be the first name up for the team, but the Broncos also elevated Calvin Throckmorton from the practice squad to provide more depth. Palczewski is the Broncos' top reserve offensive lineman, but Throckmorton has more experience, including 27 career starts.
In addition, the Broncos signed offensive lineman Karsen Barnhart to the practice squad. Undrafted out of Michigan in 2024, Barnhatt spent last season on the practice squad of the Los Angeles Chargers. He was cut following the preseason but was always a guy Jim Harbaugh liked, so there is likely untapped potential there.
Barnhart was part of a four-player tryout on Monday that included former Broncos offensive lineman Quinn Bailey. The team chose to go with the young option rather than the guy who spent six seasons with the organization, which is somewhat surprising.
In other news, the team placed linebacker Garrett Wallow on injured reserve. His spot on the 53-man roster will be taken by special teams ace J.T. Gray, whom the team signed on Monday night. In addition, linebacker Garrett Nelson, who was on the preaseason roster, was signed to the practice squad and practice squad wide receiver Thayer Thomas was also placed on injured reserve.
