Defense not 'letting us down' claims Cowboys coach image

Such has been the level of play from the Dallas Cowboys' defense through the first six weeks that there is a feeling that Dak Prescott and the offense have to be perfect for the team to win games.

That is due to the defense's inability to stop opposing offenses and the fact that they give up just over 30 points per game on average, so if Dak and Co. don't score touchdowns on every drive, Dallas suffers.

Had the defense gotten one stop against the Green Bay Packers and the Carolina Panthers, Dallas would have won both games, yet the defense couldn't, and the Cowboys sit at 2-3-1.

But for those who think the offense has a right to think the defense is letting them down, head coach Brian Schottenheimer isn't hearing it.

“You're not going to find anybody in the offensive room that feels like the defense is letting us down, I truly believe that,” Schottenheimer said. “This is a team game, and there's no reason we shouldn't go four for four in the red zone (vs. Panthers).

"So, we need to focus on doing our job, special teams need to do their job, and there's plenty of things to clean up, not just on the defensive side of the ball.”

Cowboys were let down by defense vs. Carolina

The Panthers had the ball for the final 6:07 of the game on Sunday, and the defense gave up a third and fourth-down conversion. They get a stop there, with how Prescott and the offense were playing (their final drive aside), you could make the case Dallas goes into Brandon Aubrey field goal range and wins that game.

Yes, football is a team sport, but there is no denying that the defense isn't pulling its weight on game day. If we all know it, the locker room likely does too.

Schottenheimer did state changes would be made, but declined to say what changes would be made. We wait with anticipation to see how this Cowboys defense will look against the Washington Commanders.

But as far as the defense letting the offense down? You will be hard-pressed to find someone outside of the building who doesn't think that's the case.
