The Dallas Cowboys have invested a lot in backup Joe Milton, which may explain why, despite his poor play to start the season, they aren’t ready to give up on him yet.
Despite having been praised for having a strong arm, Milton hasn’t impressed his first two times in a Cowboys uniform and was outplayed by the Cowboys former backup Cooper Rus,h who now plays for the Baltimore Ravens.
"Cooper Rush has played in this league a long time. What he did tonight didn't surprise anyone in the first half. I've seen him do that for the last three years. Joe Milton is in Year 2. So again, I'm not panicked. It's not just them. It's us as coaches, it's the other players. It's all of it, said head coach Brian Schottenheimer.
The Cowboys aren’t worried about Milton and he’s not worried either.
"If it wasn't for the interception, I feel like it would have been a smooth C+, but right now, I still feel like I give myself a D," Milton said postgame Saturday night. "I got to clean my eyes up and just understand if the boundary safety does roll down on that side, just suspect something over the top if it isn't Cover Zero."
Still, it has to be concerning to watch Milton not play well after basically letting Rush go after the end of last season. They know the injury history of Dak Prescott, so it’s crucial that they find a good backup to lead this offense in case he is injured again.
While Schottenheimer may not be ready to panic, Cowboys fans are and they want to see some improvement out of this offense before the season starts. If Milton doesn’t show improvement, you have to wonder if Jerry Jones will sign someone else.
