Browns make decision on cutting kicker Andre Szmyt image

The Cleveland Browns probably should've beaten the Cincinnati Bengals on Sunday.

But thanks in part to a missed field goal and a missed extra point by new kicker Andre Szmyt, Cleveland lost, 17-16.

After the game, head coach Kevin Stefanski was asked about the prospect of seeking a new kicker.

But the Browns aren't giving up on Szmyt yet, a bold decision but one they're still hoping can pay dividends.

“I’m not there,” Stefanski told reporters about cutting Szmyt. “You know, like most type of things. You know, points are at premium obviously. So that’s frustrating. Andre’s had a really good camp. He’s done a nice job for us. So I’m not there.”

Szmyt beat out the veteran Dustin Hopkins in the preseason to get his first regular season action as an NFL kicker.

In college, Szmyt won the Lou Groza Award as a freshman and was solid for his entire tenure at Syracuse.

He's kicked in the spring professionally, but never in the NFL regular season before Sunday.

Szmyt made an early field goal, but his late struggles will certainly linger in mind.

“I got to do better and I expect better out of myself,” Szmyt told reporters after the loss. “Just try and forget about it and move on to next week... These guys are here for me. I know I have to do my job and I’m going to do it the next time.”
