Philip Rivers and the Indianapolis Colts shocked the world Monday night when it was announced that the 44-year-old quarterback would be coming out of retirement to play for the first time since 2020.
The former Los Angeles Chargers trigger man called into ESPN Houston for a radio interview with Lance Zierlein, where he addressed his unretirement.
But Rivers also took the opportunity to take a shot at Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow, who Rivers feels is a little too flashy for an NFL quarterback.
Philip Rivers compares Joe Burrow to an NFL wide receiver
"Yeah, I don't care for Joe Burrow, I don't watch him," Rivers told Zierlein. "He thinks he's a wide - he runs around like he's a wide receiver. He's got haircut, you know, he's got fancy hair, and he's running around in fancy clothes and fur coats."
"I mean, if you're going to play, if you're going to dress like that, you know, step on outside in the slot and be a receiver. This isn't how quarterbacks, Josh Allen's how quarterbacks are supposed to look, Matthew Stafford, me, Peyton, that's how a quarterback's not supposed to look. Not like Joe Burrow, that's, you know, you're either going to be a quarterback or you're going to be a wide receiver."
Clearly, Rivers doesn't appreciate the flash that Burrow brings to the table as an NFL quarterback.
Which is fine, the two come from different eras, and Rivers is entitled to his opinion.
But there's a whole generation of football fans that love Burrow's aura, and I doubt Rivers' comments will change anything for the No. 1 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
