The Baltimore Ravens have made the decision to release safety C.J. Gardner-Johnson just one week after signing him.
According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, the decision was amicable and came as a result of Gardner-Johnson not being happy with his path to work in Baltimore.
“After the Ravens traded for a safety, we were looking for a clearer path to play,” Gardner-Johnson's agent, Kevin Conner, told Schefter.
The trade Conner is talking about was the one involving the Los Angeles Chargers in which the Ravens netted safety Alohi Gilman while sending edge rusher Odafe Oweh to the AFC West squad.
Clearly, that trade, which came on the same day as the Gardner-Johnson signing, didn't sit well with the veteran.
Before that move, Gardner-Johnson had a clear path to playing time with the Ravens dealing with injuries. Now, he'll look to find a new opportunity. Gardner-Johnson is free to sign with any team.
Gardner-Johnson started the year with the Houston Texans after being traded by the Philadelphia Eagles. However, Gardner-Johnson ran into issues behind the scenes with both teammates and coaches.
Of course, Gardner-Johnson is no stranger to having friction with his own teams, and that could make him radioactive to potential suitors.
