Shedeur Sanders didn’t want to be drafted by and play for the Baltimore Ravens, primarily objecting to backing up Lamar Jackson with little chances of actually taking the field anytime soon. Pro Football Talk’s Mike Florio believes that will ultimately prove foolish for several reasons.
The first? Jackson is injury-prone enough for the “Grown QB” to have had a chance at getting a spot start here or there. His temporary preseason teammate on the Cleveland Browns, Tyler Huntley, could’ve told him that. The other is that “the Ravens are the Ravens.” And “the Browns are the Browns.”
As Florio went on to say, Sanders will never admit he made a mistake denying Baltimore selecting him with the No. 141 pick in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL draft.
“It would be interesting to know whether Sanders currently regrets saying ‘no thanks’ to Baltimore. If he is, it’s unlikely that he’ll ever admit it,” Florio said.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter made the bombshell revelation during Sunday NFL Countdown.
“A consensus had been headed. The Baltimore Ravens were planning to select Shedeur Sanders in the fifth round with the 141st overall selection. But, when he found out, he got word back to the Ravens that he preferred not to go to a place where he’d be competing and backing up Lamar Jackson. He wanted to be in a place that he could play,” Schefter said.
“When the Ravens got that message, they pivoted, went a different direction with the 141st overall selection. And three picks later, the Cleveland Browns selected Shedeur Sanders, who will be in Baltimore today, where he could have been spending his NFL career if he were willing to back up Lamar Jackson.”
Shedeur probably won’t admit that he regrets it while he’s employed by the Browns. If there were ever a split, though?
Sanders, who started his own podcast, probably wouldn’t be afraid to discuss it.
