The Atlanta Falcons are gearing up for a big season—one that they hope ends with a long-awaited return to the playoffs. A major focus this offseason has been improving the defense. The unit features a mix of experienced veterans and promising young talent. Defensive captain Jessie Bates is expected to take on a key mentorship role.
“Bates' mentorship is crucial for the Falcons, who will likely field a very young defense in 2025. Walker and fellow pass rusher James Pearce Jr. were both first-round picks in April and will likely see a lot of playing time as rookies. The Falcons also drafted Watts and Billy Bowman Jr., a fourth-round pick who played safety in college and will play nickel corner in Atlanta,” ESPN’s Marc Raimondi wrote.
One standout from training camp has been young defensive lineman Ruke Orhorhoro, who has consistently impressed coaches. The defensive staff has been vocal about their excitement for his potential.
“In the early parts of camp, the coaching staff has been vocal in their support of Orhorhoro. First-year defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich over the weekend confirmed his feelings, ‘The sky is the limit for him. Potential is out of this world. I'm excited to be on this journey with him,’” SI’s Garrett Chapman wrote.
Head coach Raheem Morris has high expectations for the second-year player. Based on how Orhorhoro has been talked about throughout camp, many assumed he was the presumptive starter. However, in a surprising move, he was not listed as a starter on Tuesday’s depth chart.
“Falcons listed Brandon Dorlus as the interior starter next to David Onyemata. Impressive rise up the depth chart for the second-year DL,” The Falcoholic’s Kevin Knight wrote.

Orhorhoro now finds himself backing up Dorlus—a somewhat unexpected development. Given the praise he’s received throughout the summer, most believed he had secured the starting role. It appears he’ll begin the season as a backup, with an opportunity to work his way into a starting position.
