After the Cleveland Browns shipped quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Las Vegas Raiders, they let the football world know they were comfortable with two rookie quarterbacks as their only insurance behind Joe Flacco.
Former Oregon Ducks passer Dillon Gabriel was named the backup behind Flacco, and Shedeur Sanders was relegated to the emergency third quarterback spot.
While Browns fans may have fond memories of Flacco's 2023 wildcard run with Cleveland, its evident he is not the future and it's most likely only a matter of time before the rookies get some playing time, but who do the Browns plan on playing first?
Dianna Russini Reports We Shouldn't Expect to See Shedeur Sanders Anytime Soon
According to The Athletic's NFL insider Dianna Russini, we shouldn't expect to see the Browns' 144th overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft anytime soon.
"However, don’t plan on seeing the fifth-round rookie on the field this season unless things get really weird. Cleveland believes in Joe Flacco’s experience and Dillon Gabriel’s development as the backup." Wrote Russini.
While this is a positive develpment for Gabriel, as it appears the former Oregon standout will have the first crack at Cleveland's starting quarterback job if Flacco gets benched or goes down with injury, it is surely a disapointment for fans who thought they may see Sanders get some run this year.
However, this is the Browns we're talking about, and things get weird all the time in Cleveland so there can't be a zero percent chance that the former Colorado Buffalo sees the field at some point.
For now though, Flacco will remain the starter after his one touchdown, two interception performance Sunday against the Cincinnati Bengals.
But the clock is ticking on the 40-year-old veteran.
